ASIC'98 Conference
Niagara Falls Tour
The tour includes:
-
a guide to escort the members of our party
-
a ride on the Maid of the Mist Boat
-
dinner at John's Flaming Hearth restaurant
-
tour will take you around and about the sights adjacent to the Falls, which
includes the sites on Goat Island, and Prospect Point Viewing Areas.
-
a visit to a hydroelectric power plant en route.
Sites of interest on Goat Island:
-
Terrapin Point-overlook at the brink of the Canadian Falls and sites on
the Canadian (Niagara Falls, Ontario) side of the river.
-
Three Sisters Islands- Three small islands among the rapids, linked to
Goat island and themselves by way of footbridges. The islands are
sequentially linked by the walkway, and the last island places the visitor
at the edge of the Upper Rapids, which provides a view of Canada looking
across a 1 mile wide raging river. About 100 feet away is a "miniwaterfall"
about 10 feet high that extends across the Niagara River from Goat Island
to Canada.
-
Cave of the Winds - A tour of the base of the American Falls. Visitors
are provided raingear for the tour. (recommend taking a pair of sandals
or extra sneakers that can get water logged.)
-
Luna Island - small island at brink of the American Falls separated from
Goat Island by the Bridal
Veil Falls. (Another viewing point for the American
Falls).
Sites of interest at Niagara reservation:
-
Prospect Point - Overlook at the brink(top) of the American Falls, with
a view of the gorge below the Falls and Niagara Falls, Ontario. Maid
of the Mist Tour boat departs at Observation tower next to Prospect Point.
-
Maid of the Mist boat tour takes viewers up river below the falls past
the American and Bridal Veil Falls and turns around at the base of the
Canadian Falls. Turn around point is impressive as you are in the middle
of the crescent form of the waterfall and it gives the appearance
you are "surrounded" by the falls on 3 sides.
There will be some free time after dinner. There is a shopping mall for
visitors and the Wintergarden
is next door. Drive to Niagara Falls from Rochester will take us along
the Niagara Escarpment for the last one quarter of the drive. The escarpment
is a ridge about two hundred feet high, and it is crossed at Lewiston,
NY, where one can observe a great view of the Niagara River and farmland
below.
From Lewiston to Niagara Falls, the drive will follow the Gorge formed
by the River and drive over the New York State Power Authority's hydroelectric
dam which has a 2,200 Megawatt capability. Tour will stop here
at the visitor's
center and overlook area for the dam river gorge. Also within
view are 2 multi megawatt hydroelectric dams on the Canadian side of the
river: the Sir Adam Beck I and II.
